Tennessee High School Mock Trial Team
ADAs Lesley Tiller and Kent Chitwood have been coaching the mock trial team from Tennessee High School since 2012. Each year, the Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers Division creates a mock trial problem that alternates between a criminal and civil fact patter. The mock trial problem usually contains the affidavits of six witnesses and various exhibits. The high school students must play the roles of the witnesses and attorneys and each school must be prepared to try the case from either side (Plaintiff/State or Defendant). Mock trial teams from across upper Northeast Tennessee meet to compete against each other in February. The winner of the regional competition advances to the State competition in Nashville, which is usually held in March. ADAs Tiller and Chitwood have volunteered hundreds of hours of their time to participate in this very worthy and educational endeavor.
This year, the District Attorney's Office pooled its resources to provide a Christmas surprise to a family in Sullivan County.
Four children, two sisters and their two brothers, will open presents of clothes, toys, and shoes this Christmas. After collecting personal donations from our staff, Robin Wade and Lesley Tiller went shopping, choosing the gifts based on the kids' wish lists, but with educational and healthy additions like toiletries, story books and an art set. We hope this gift helps makes Christmas a special day for this family, and we wish everyone in our community a Merry Christmas and a safe, happy holiday season!
