By statue, the Child Protection Investigation Team (CPIT) and the Child Abuse Review Team (CART) exist for each county in the state of Tennessee. Here in Sullivan County, we have two of each team; one for Bristol and the upper end of the County and one for Kingsport and the lower end of the county. Each team consists of personnel from the District Attorney’s Office, city and county law enforcement professionals, various juvenile courts, Department of Children’s Services, mental health professionals, medical professionals (CART only), counseling staff from schools (CART only) and staff members of the Children’s Advocacy Center. The CPIT team members are charged with the duty to investigate all allegations of sexual abuse and serious physical abuse reported within the county.
Each team meets monthly and reviews all reports of physical and sexual child abuse. Reports of the activities of CPIT for Sullivan County are made to the Tennessee Legislature each year. The two Assistant District Attorneys are responsible for supervising the investigations and for the ultimate prosecutions in Sullivan County courts of serious physical child abuse and sexual abuse or exploitation of children.
