Child Support

Our Goal

The goal of Child Support Services is to ensure that the children of Tennessee receive financial and medical support from both parents.

The Child Support Division of the District Attorney General’s Office was created in 1977 when the District Attorney General signed a contract with the State Department of Human Services agreeing to provide the legal services necessary for the collection of the court-ordered support for dependent children and establish paternity for children born out of wedlock.

From three employees and first-year collections of $60,000, the Division has grown to fifteen employees with collections totaling almost $11 million for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2020.

Other changes such as a statewide, computerized system to direct all payments to a central location in Nashville have also been made.  Such changes have been instated to make the process more responsive to client needs.

Much of the money collected as a result of our efforts go directly back to state coffers to replace welfare funds distributed under the aid to dependent children provisions.
